Waterstone Gallery’s April exhibition features found metal sculpture by Nancy Wilkins. In this new series, Source, Wilkins captures the initial spark of a creative idea and allows that energy to run through her work. Inspired by movement as well as formal elements of composition, she strikes a balance between the two in these repurposed metal assemblages. Wilkins found her material by digging through scrap bins at the junk yard. She was inspired by the color, patina and texture of the discarded metal. Arc wielder in hand, Wilkins set about repurposing these found objects into sculpture. Along the way, she discovered that her source of inspiration wasn’t just the material itself, it was the story behind the material. It was the energy of the creative process, the physicality of the work and an internal need for balance that became her source material.
