show

Imagining Home -100 exercises in empathy (Part 3) by Lisa Jarrett is a participatory drawing project. Jarrett invited select participants to take turns creating an imaginary homeland from the same wad of her hair. The resulting three-dimensional drawings were then photocopied to create the two-dimensional maps presented in the exhibition. These maps are both symbols and questions.

On View by Melanie Stevens presents the fifth iteration of If You’re Watching This, It’s Too Late. This multi-media work combines copper etchings of images ripped from popular news media, then screen printed onto fabrics. The installation as a whole is both a nod to the editorial illustration often found in newsprint, as well as a call and response to daily current events as they were happening in the moment. This work began in 2016 and has shown four times in Portland, with a new section added each time. The installation currently extends to over one hundred feet.

For the month of September, the Russo Lee Gallery will present Phantom Limbs by gallery artist Samantha Wall. Phantom Limbs is an exploration of family identity, cultural history, and loss. The drawing exhibition interweaves portraiture with Korean ritual narratives, summoning the past in order to decipher the present.
