First Selections
Object Studies Lab // PNCA
Opening Event: May 5, 2016 // 6:00pm - 8:00pm

The Center for Contemporary Art & Culture is proud to present First Selections, an exhibition of works selected by PNCA professor Frank Irby from the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Craft.

As steward of the permanent collection of Museum of Contemporary Craft, the Center launches a series of exhibitions to honor, examine, and reveal the power of this collection. The inaugural exhibition, First Selections, opens on May 5th in the Object Studies Lab, located in the Dorothy Lemelson Innovation Studio. We wanted to launch this endeavor through the lens of an artist and teacher, and who better to entrust with this undertaking than Frank Irby, a Northwest craft artist and PNCA faculty member for the past 25 years. When we asked Frank Irby how he made his selections he noted, “Mostly all the works I chose are pieces whose makers affected me when I was the age of most of the people who go to school here.”

The Museum's 1,300+ piece permanent collection is a regional treasure, one that preserves and makes accessible 75+ years of significant craft and design works. As Glenn Adamson, a leading craft scholar and Director of NYC's Museum of Art and Design, wrote in 2008's Unpacking the Collection, “…the collection of Museum of Contemporary Craft: a regional collection, to be sure, and one that includes masterpieces and modest piece alike… It is a place to engage with the realities of craft in its full range and in all the vibrant particularity that only a local story can provide. If you are looking for a true picture of modern craft – or at least a part of its infinitely varied fabric – you need look no further.”
